Buy the space your food actually uses
Choose an air fryer by the shape of the food you want to cook, then use its capacity label as a secondary check. A deep, narrow drawer and a broad, shallow drawer can have similar advertised volume while handling a pizza, fillet, or baking dish very differently. The useful question is whether your usual meal fits in the arrangement that its instructions require.
Choose the surface shape according to the food you want to fit. A compact drawer may suit a side dish perfectly. A broad basket may matter more when you want several flat pieces together. Decide which problem you are solving before comparing the largest number on the box.
Separate four measurements
External appliance dimensions describe the counter space occupied by the body. Internal drawer dimensions describe the cavity. The removable cooking plate has its own footprint. A compatible baking dish may need more clearance still, because its rim, handles, and sides occupy space above the plate.
Ask a retailer or manufacturer which measurement it is supplying. A ruler stretched across the top lip can overstate a tapered basket's usable floor. A photograph with food is useful context, but perspective is not a reliable scale. Record width, depth, and height separately rather than reducing everything to a single litres figure.
Use a meal-shaped paper template
Draw the outline of the dish you actually want to use on paper, including handles. For foods cooked directly on a plate, sketch the intended arrangement instead. Two fish fillets beside each other need a different footprint from a bowl of vegetables. Compare that outline with confirmed internal measurements and the model's accessory guidance.
Keep the template outside the appliance. It is a planning tool, not a liner or something to put into a hot basket. If the seller cannot supply reliable dimensions, treat food fit as unresolved. An attractive price does not make an unknown basket larger.
A real example of different design priorities
Moulinex describes its AL4018F0 Surface XL around broad cooking area and compatibility with a 27 cm pizza or tart. That is a model-specific manufacturer claim, not the basket dimensions of every Easy Fry. Philips separately groups compatible baking-tin sizes by model in its support guidance. Those pages illustrate why the exact reference matters.
Do not transfer either example to another product with XL in its name. Check the regional model and the object you intend to fit. If a dish fits at the top but cannot sit in its intended position, it has not passed the practical fit check.
Plan for the awkward meal
Write down three meals: your everyday meal, your largest routine meal, and an occasional awkward item. Suppose everyday use is reheating a portion, weekly use is two flat pieces of fish, and occasional use is a round baking dish. A model that fits the first two may still be a good buy if you will keep using the oven for the third.
That tradeoff is clearer than trying to find one small appliance that fits every possible dinner. Conversely, if the awkward item is your weekly staple, do not accept a basket that forces you to cut it or change cookware every time.
What to verify before ordering
Save the measurements with the full model number and the date checked. Recheck the final retailer listing against that reference, especially if a colour or bundle selection changes the item. Your decision is complete when the appliance fits the counter, the meal fits the cooking surface, and the removable parts fit your cleaning space.
- Confirm internal floor dimensions rather than only exterior width.
- Check tapered corners, handles, and maximum usable height.
- Verify the cooking plate and accessory fit for the exact regional reference.
- Decide which foods may reasonably stay in your existing oven.
- Ask for clarification when a retailer mixes basket and body dimensions.
- Keep the manufacturer fit guidance with your purchase record.
